Gray for Mayor chairwoman withdraws nomination to board

The embattled chairwoman of the Gray for Mayor campaign has withdrawn her nomination to become chairwoman of the Washington Convention Center and Sports Authority.

Lorraine Green “has decided to re-establish a business venture she put on hold several years ago and therefore cannot assume the WCCSA position,” Gray’s office said in a statement Monday.

Former mayoral candidate Sulaimon Brown has accused Green of passing him cash-stuffed envelopes so Brown could stay on the campaign trail last summer and attack then-Mayor Adrian Fenty. Those accusations have led to investigations by the U.S. Attorney’s office and the House, both of which have been questioning Green. She is also scheduled to testify at a D.C. Council hearing on Thursday.

Green and Gray have been friends for the more than 20 years and she has long been one of his closest advisors.
