Dominion accuses Powell of lying for financial gain and fame

Dominion Voting Systems accused attorney Sidney Powell of lying about the company in order to “financially enrich herself.”

The new filing asks a judge to deny Powell’s request to dismiss the $1.3 billion lawsuit Dominion leveled against her in January.

The high-profile former federal prosecutor, who defended former Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn before allying herself with former President Donald Trump in election challenge lawsuits that were roundly met with failure, hit the airwaves and filed litigation claiming that foreign agents were able to infiltrate Dominion voting machines in order to turn the election against Trump.

“Repeatedly over a period of months, Powell published false statements about Dominion, knowing or recklessly disregarding that they are false, including by intentionally lying about having evidence that does not exist,” Dominion said in its filing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Dominion added that Powell was “specifically put on notice of the truth and asked to retract,” but she kept pumping out “the false accusations.”

“Powell’s falsehoods were in furtherance of her plan to financially enrich herself, to raise her public profile, and to ingratiate herself to Donald Trump for benefits she expected to receive,” Dominion added.

Powell sells signed books and T-shirts on her website, on which she also shares her filings and interviews.

“I can hardly wait to put forth all the evidence we have collected on Dominion,” Powell said in a November interview with then-Fox Business host Lou Dobbs, “starting with the fact that it was created to produce altered voting results in Venezuela for Hugo Chavez and then shipped internationally to manipulate votes for purchase in other countries, including this one.”

Powell’s request to have the court dismiss the lawsuit said her various claims about Dominion were statements of opinion.

“In light of all the circumstances surrounding the statements, their context, and the availability of the facts on which the statements were based, it was clear to reasonable persons that Powell’s claims were her opinions and legal theories on a matter of utmost public concern,” the filing stated, adding, “Even assuming, arguendo, that each of the statements alleged in the complaint could be proved true or false, no reasonable person would conclude that the statements were truly statements of fact.”

However, in an interview with conservative pundit Dinesh D’Souza that she shares on her website, Powell insisted she is “not backtracking a bit” and claimed that people are “misquoting from and taking out of context” a statement from a decision out of the D.C. Circuit.

In a recent CNN poll, 70% of Republicans said they didn’t believe President Joe Biden won enough votes to become president.
