Cuomo says coronavirus-related deaths in New York dropping ‘for the first time’

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said his state might be making some progress in combating the coronavirus.

Cuomo delivered an update to New Yorkers on the government and medical sector’s fight to contain the coronavirus during a news conference on Sunday and said the number of deaths in the city from the pathogen has decreased for several consecutive days “for the first time.”

Intubations are decreasing as well, he said, and patients are being discharged from hospitals in larger numbers. Cuomo called the developments “great news.”

Still, the Democratic governor tamped down expectations, saying it is “too early to tell” if these positive developments signal the worst of the crisis is over.

New York is the epicenter for the coronavirus in the United States and contains over a third of the nation’s cases and over half its deaths from the COVID-19 virus. New York has reported about 122,000 cases and nearly 4,200 deaths.
