Paul Ryan shoots down narrative that he lost the GOP to Donald Trump

House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said he accomplished what he came to do in Congress, despite many criticisms in recent days that his longest-lasting legacy will be President Trump’s presidency.

“I don’t see things like that,” Ryan said, going on to list many of the things he had accomplished during his time in Congress and as speaker of the House.

Conservative commentator Charlie Sykes was among those who said it would be a “hard pill to swallow” that instead of people remembering Ryan for keeping a “stiff upper lip” when it came to dealing with President Trump, it would be remembered that Trump won over Ryan.

“One person will not solve all of those things,” Ryan said regarding all of the pieces of legislation he had attempted to pass during his time as speaker. “I feel like I’ve done a lot to advance that debate.”

Earlier in the week Ryan announced that he would be retiring from the House at the end of his term, and in the meantime would continue carrying out his duties as House speaker.
