A 1-year-old boy who was shot while in a vehicle on Chicago’s Lake Shore Drive is making “slow but steady progress” in his recovery and is moving his extremities, his doctor said.
The boy, Kayden Swann, was shot in the temple on April 6 while riding in the back seat of a car during what police called a road rage incident. The driver of an SUV allegedly shot at the vehicle the boy was in after an altercation began when the SUV nearly struck the car, Cook County prosecutors said.
Dr. Marcelo Malakooti’s medical staff is “hopeful” that the toddler will be taken off his ventilator machine “at some point in the future,” he said in a statement Monday, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Swann suffered a severe brain injury after the shooting and was put into a medically induced coma and is on a ventilator.

“The entire Pediatric Intensive Care Unit team, including nursing, social work, family services, respiratory therapists, physicians, and surgeons, have provided the best care and support for Kayden and his entire family,” Malakooti said.
The driver of the vehicle the boy was riding in, 43-year-old Jushawn Brown, was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon. Police have not concluded if Brown fired any shots.
Bullet shell casings police recovered from the scene were fired from the other vehicle and did not belong to Brown, according to court documents obtained by Fox 32 Chicago.
The driver of the SUV has not been taken into custody as detectives continue their investigation, prosecutors said.
Brown is in a relationship with Swann’s grandmother, according to prosecutors.
