White House Correspondents Association president Margaret Talev took a shot at President Trump and his “fake news” attacks on the press during a speech at her group’s annual dinner in Washington, D.C., Saturday evening.
But the White House correspondent for Bloomberg News also noted how the era of Trump has been lucrative for the field of journalism.
“We reject efforts by anyone, especially our elected leaders, to paint journalism as un-American, to undermine trust between reporter and reader, or to cast doubt on the relevance of facts and truth in the modern age,” Talev said during Saturday’s annual event.

Her comments were met with a round of applause from the room full of members of the media, celebrities, and elected officials.
“An attack on any journalist is an attack on us all,” Talev added. She did not mention Trump by name while addressing the attacks on journalists.
Despite the jab, Talev noted that protecting journalism isn’t about business even though covering Trump attacking the press has been good business.
“This really isn’t about the business of protecting journalism as a business. In fact, our businesses have all done pretty well in the last couple of years,” she said.
Talev also gave a salute to Sarah Sanders, the White House press secretary, who was sitting in for Trump.
Trump skipped the annual dinner for the second year in a row, continuing his longstanding feud with the media. Instead, he hosted a campaign style rally in Michigan where he called the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner “phony.”
