College to launch landscape architecture program

Anne Arundel Community College will launch a new certificate program in landscape architecture in the fall.

Students would take 18 credits of study in architectural design, architectural materials and methods, basic horticulture and landscape architecture. Those completing the program will be employable as a landscape drafter, garden design assistant or landscape designassistant within the landscape design industry. Or they could continue their education.

“This new program reflects the government and marketplace focus on creating a sustainable landscape,” Mike Ryan, chair of the college?s architecture department said in a statement.

“Our increased understanding of the importance of land use on water quality has led to protective legislation that regulates land use on many properties in the Chesapeake Bay watershed,” said Steve Ailstock, director of the college Environmental Center and professor of biology. “This program is sensitive to these new requirements and shows how landscapes can be developed that are beautiful, functional and important for enhancing environmental quality while meeting compliance requirements of various, local, state and federal statures.”
