Florida’s junior U.S. senator said Sunday he will continue to support President Trump on securing the southern border and urged his Republican colleagues to do the same.
Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., who sits on the Armed Services and Homeland Security committees, told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures'” that he was sold on giving the president his full support on border security after his trip to the U.S.-Mexico border last week.
“I’m going to vote for border security. I’m going to vote with the president. Everybody that’s going to vote on this ought to go down to the border like I did, talk to Border Patrol and they will tell you one, they need more people. Two, they need new technology the technology is decades old. And three, they’ve got to have barriers so they have operational control,” Scott said.
The newly elected Florida lawmaker said he thinks Trump has done everything in his power to negotiate with the Democrats on a bill that satisfied the political needs of both parties. In his view, the Democrats’ unwillingness to compromise gives the White House the justification for taking unilateral action on the southern border.
While Scott has offered his support for a national emergency declaration, he regrets that the Congress was unable to reach a deal through regular order.
“I think people are, you know, they want to say that this is not the right process and I agree. It’s not the right process. I mean, nobody wants this to be the process we go through,” Scott said.
“Why are we here? Because Washington is completely dysfunctional. That’s it. Washington doesn’t work I’ve been there about two months. It doesn’t work. But the Democrats will not fund what Americans want. Americans want border security. The president’s doing his job, secure the border,” he added.
