Joe Biden: ‘I have a regret that I am not president’

Former Vice President Joe Biden told Oprah Winfrey in a new interview that he regrets not being president, a sign he may yet look to challenge Donald Trump in 2020.

“I have a regret that I am not president, because I think there’s so much opportunity,” Biden told Winfrey. “I think America is so incredibly well-positioned.”

Biden reiterated that he didn’t run because he didn’t feel he could give the effort as much attention as the campaign needs, in the wake of the death of his son, Beau Biden. But he said he felt he was the most qualified candidate out there.

“I believed I was,” Biden said. “But was I prepared to be able to give my whole heart, my whole soul, all my attention to the endeavor? And I knew I wasn’t.”

Biden has said previously he felt he needed to let Hillary Clinton run. Afterwards, however, he said he didn’t believe Clinton was the best candidate, and said Clinton herself didn’t seem to know why she was running.

“I don’t think she ever really figured it out,” he said in December.
