Louie Gohmert: House GOP left Trump to ‘dangle’ by not working Friday

Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, charged that House Republican leaders showed a lack of support for President Trump by deciding not to do any legislative business on Friday.

On Fox News, Gohmert said that move will allow the press and others to focus on former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony, instead of the GOP’s agenda to shrink the government and create jobs.

“We were supposed to be in session today,” Gohmert said. “That helps change the message back to what we’re doing.”

“But Tuesday, apparently, our leadership changed the week’s scheduling and said, ‘let’s go dark on Friday,’ which means the emphasis will not be on what we’re doing good in Washington,” he said.

“We’re basically leaving the president to dangle,” Gohmert added. “I’ve very concerned we’re not being supportive enough to get the message out.”

Comey opened the Thursday Senate Intelligence Committee hearing by saying Trump told “lies” to back up his decision to fire Comey, including that Comey was not liked within the FBI.

But Trump and his lawyer said Trump was ultimately “vindicated” because Comey admitted in his prepared remarks that Trump has not been under investigation in the FBI’s probe of Russia’s meddling in the election.

Trump himself claimed “total and complete vindication” in a Friday tweet.

Still, Gohmert said Republicans in Congress need to do more to back up Trump. He referred to Comey’s testimony in which he said he leaked his own memos to the press, and echoed other Republican complaints that somehow, it was never leaked out that Trump was not a target in the investigation.

“As Marco Rubio said… the only thing that didn’t leak was the truth,” Gohmert said.
