KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) — A new exhibit in Key West celebrates artists born on the Florida island known for its eclectic people and tropical surroundings.

“Native Sons and Daughters” opened Saturday at The Gallery on Greene and will run for two weeks.

The exhibit features paintings and wood carvings from five artists the gallery says are “as diverse as the people who populate their island home.”

Gallery director and curator Nance Frank says the idea for the exhibit came after years of working with the late folk artist Mario Sanchez, whose vibrant wood carvings have been displayed around the world.

Several of the artists say they hope the exhibit will remind patrons of the unique Key West they grew up and hope to preserve.
