Washington state’s GOP convention picked Ted Cruz over Donald Trump this weekend, despite Cruz having quit the 2016 presidential race earlier this month.
Supporters of Ted Cruz’s defunct presidential campaign won 40 of Washington’s 41 elected delegate spots to the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, according to the Seattle Times.
The news appears to have caused headaches for some Republicans running for statewide office in Washington. The Times reported gubernatorial candidate Bill Bryant “steadfastly refused” to say whether he would support Trump in comments to reporters.
Trump became the GOP’s presumptive nominee after Cruz lost the Indiana primary on May 3 and quit the 2016 race. But Cruz was expected to perform well in western states that remained on the Republican primary calendar, and it appears some of his supporters are not ready to give up the fight.
While national polls showing Trump inching past Hillary Clinton in a hypothetical general election matchup suggest Republicans are uniting behind Trump, Washington’s results indicate he still has work to do to unite the GOP.
