Emmy host jokes: White people at awards who thank Jesus are ‘Republicans and ex-crackheads’

One of the co-hosts of the 70th Annual Emmy Awards made an off-color joke about Republicans and Jesus Christ Monday night.

Michael Che made a quip about the lack of winners thanking Jesus during his opening monologue with co-cost and fellow “Saturday Night Live” star Colin Jost.

“My mother is not watching,” Che said. “She says she doesn’t like watching white award shows because you guys don’t thank Jesus enough. That’s true. The only white people that thank Jesus are Republicans and ex-crackheads.”

The joke by Che, who is black, upset some viewers who sounded off on Twitter.

Chrissy Teigen later joked with her husband, John Legend, who played the title role in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” as they presented an award. “Thank you, Jesus,” she said, before adding, “That’s for you Michael.”

Later in the evening, Jeff Daniels and Merritt Wever of the Netflix western “Godless” won an Emmy for best supporting actor in a limited series.
