Fox Business host grills Trump campaign spokeswoman over refusal to cancel rallies

Fox Business host Stuart Varney repeatedly questioned a Trump campaign spokeswoman over the decision to continue holding rallies amid the coronavirus outbreak.

President Trump has not canceled any of his campaign rallies and scheduled an additional one in Wisconsin, while the two main Democratic primary candidates, former Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders, canceled similar events.

Varney pressed Trump campaign national press secretary Kayleigh McEnany on this topic on Wednesday.

McEnany said she was not worried about holding the events “because we have the added advantage here at the Trump campaign that our candidate happens to be the president of the United States, who is surrounded by the best and most talented health experts in the world.”

McEnany noted that Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said to take it “case by case,” before the Fox Business host interrupted.

“I’m sorry, Kayleigh, but Dr. Fauci, who is also testifying on Capitol Hill, he just said there should be no large crowds,” he said.

McEnany maintained that their actions were compatible with what doctors are saying.

“Look, we have the commander in chief, we have the best health experts, we are taking it day by day, we are currently proceeding as normal — and look, Joe Biden, he’s suspending his rallies,” McEnany said. “He’s been dying to get off the campaign trail. The man can only speak for seven minutes. So no wonder he wants to suspend his rallies.”

Varney said, “You are immediately going to be hit with” backlash if they defy Fauci, who told lawmakers on Wednesday that “things will get worse than they are right now” as urban sites across the country move to curtail public gatherings as the number of infected continue to climb.

McEnany said the decision to cancel rallies will come from the president.
