Man beaten in viral video while defending neighborhood during riots in stable condition, police say

A Dallas man who was beaten until he laid motionless on the ground during violent protests after George Floyd’s death is reportedly in stable condition.

A graphic video, which has gone viral since it was posted to Twitter Saturday night, showed a mob of rioters in the Texas city beating a man with a skateboard and throwing rocks at him until he appeared to lose consciousness.

Authorities have since reported that the man is now in stable condition, according to the Dallas Morning News. A Dallas police spokesman told the news outlet on Sunday that the man was “carrying a machete to allegedly protect his neighborhood from protesters.”

“The victim confronted protesters while holding the machete and was subsequently assaulted,” the person added.

It is unclear if any arrests were made from the incident.

Saturday marked the second day of riots in the city in the wake of the death of Floyd, an unarmed black man, after a white police officer pinned him down by placing a knee on the back of his neck for several minutes. The officer, Derek Chauvin, was fired along with three others involved in the incident and has been charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter.

The Dallas protests began peacefully but spiraled into riots with people looting and committing acts of violence.
