UN official: ISIS executing civilians as U.S., allies advance on Mosul

The Islamic State has executed at least 232 people in and around Mosul, and may plan on using tens of thousands as human shields, a United Nations official told CNN Friday.

“On Wednesday, ISIS executed 42 civilians in Hammam al-Alil, a town south of Mosul. Also on Wednesday, ISIS executed 190 former Iraqi Security Forces for refusing to join them, in the Al Ghazlani base near Mosul,” said Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Ravina Shamdasani.

Since mid-October, the Islamic State has moved “tens of thousands” of men, women, and children who live outside Mosul into the city. Shamdasani said U.N. officials fear that the terror group will “use them as human shields against the Iraqi forces advance on Mosul.”

The U.S. and its allies are advancing toward Mosul, which is thought to be defended by as many as 5,000 Islamic State fighters.
