Metro warns of major rail delays this weekend

Weekend track work is expected to cause significant delays on the Blue and Red Metro lines this weekend as the transit workers work to repair sections of track, officials said.

The section of the Blue line between Franconia-Springfield and King Street Metrorail stations will be shut down for a massive maintenance project.

All westbound Blue line trains will stop at the King Street station and be rerouted to the Yellow Line’s Huntington station, officials said.

Metro will operate a special six-car shuttle between the Franconia-Springfield and King Street stations.

Then riders will need to board a new train to reach their final destination, officials said.

The track work, which will begin at 10 p.m. today and continue until midnight Sunday, is expected to cause 35-minute delays.

All other Blue Line trains will run between the Largo Town Center and Huntington Metrorail stations.

Red Line trains will share one track between Grosvenor-Strathmore and the Medical Center Metrorail Stations for track maintenance on Saturday and Sunday. Officials expect 10- to 15-minute delays.

Green Line trains will share onetrack between the Greenbelt and College Park Metrorail stations during the day Saturday and Sunday while Metro tests railcars.

Passengers should add up to 10 minutes of travel time, officials said.

Not all the transit news is bad for this weekend.

Riders of the D.C. Circulator can ride for free all day today to celebrate its first anniversary.

The circulator averaged just a few hundred riders daily when it began offering service last July.

Now the three-route service is averaging more than 7,000 riders daily.
