US service member killed in Afghanistan

A U.S. service member was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan on Monday.

Military officials have not provided any other information on the death. The identity of the service member is being withheld pending notification to the next of kin, Resolute Support said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, according to the Military Times. The U.S. service member was killed in an explosion during an operation in Kunduz Province, Afghanistan, according to Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

Twenty American troops have been killed during combat operations in Afghanistan this year, one of the deadliest years for U.S. forces since 2015, when the United States began reducing such operations. The U.S. has about 13,000 troops still deployed in Afghanistan.

The death came amid U.S. peace talks with the Taliban to end the longest war in U.S. history. President Trump briefly ended the talks in September after the death of a U.S. service member.
