Clinton ally James Carville said Sunday he didn’t know whether failed 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton could stage a comeback in the political arena, but added she’s received the most votes in any election she’s contested.
“My guess is that’s really not in her plans right now. She didn’t show any indication that she wants to run for president again. She’s run twice and it’s an exhausting thing,” Carville told John Catsimatidis on 970 AM in New York.
“You know, she’s never run an election where she didn’t get the most votes, both in the primaries in 2008, the primaries in 2016, and the general election in 2016,” he continued. “So there’s something to be said for that.”
But Carville, who rose to national prominence for masterminding Bill Clinton’s successful tilt for the White House with political consulting partner Paul Begala, said he would throw his support behind New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu should Landrieu launched a 2020 presidential campaign.
On Sunday, the Louisiana native also predicted a “powder blue or navy blue” Democratic wave in the 2018 midterms and defended the party’s seeming lack of leadership.
“There’s nobody in charge of the Democratic Party, nor should there be. We don’t have have power,” Carville said, adding that Democrats shouldn’t shy away from running on economic issues this cycle because Obamacare was polling better than the Republican tax cut.
