Pence papers over friction with Trump about Jan. 6 behavior

Former Vice President Mike Pence is publicly maintaining a rosy view of his White House tenure working with ex-President Donald Trump, despite clear signs the pair had a falling out about efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Pence had nothing but glowing praise for the former president’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic during a podcast conversation with Ronna McDaniel, chairwoman of the Republican National Committee. The discussion touched on the highs of the former administration, from foreign policy victories to the pandemic response.

“We had to develop therapeutics and develop a vaccine as quickly as possible, but because of, frankly, the leadership of President Trump, we provided the full cooperation not just of the whole of government, but the whole of America,” he told McDaniel on her Real America podcast.

He also praised Trump’s strength in foreign policy, noting “the Trump-Pence administration was the only administration in the 21st century where Putin and Russia did not even try to change international boundary lines by force.” Pence credited the Trump administration with boosting U.S. prosperity and said people regularly approach him in the street to thank him for the administration’s positive impact on their lives.

“I tell them, we’re going get it all back,” Pence said.

Trump and his vice president had a falling out when Pence refused to try to overturn the results of the 2020 election, specifically on how to count or not electoral results from swing states such as Arizona and Pennsylvania.

“Mike and I had a great relationship except for the very important factor that took place at the end. We had a very good relationship,” Trump told the Washington Examiner earlier this month. “I haven’t spoken to him in a long time.”

“I was disappointed in Mike,” Trump added.

Both are considering a 2024 bid for the presidency, and a head-to-head run may reveal more about their relationship behind the scenes.
