U.S. Department of Justice Attorney McKay Smith posted a harrowing thread of portraits of Holocaust survivors on Twitter, recounting how their lives were affected by the genocide with an accompanying caption in their own handwriting.
The pictures were taken by British photographer Harry Borden beginning in 2007, and he spent five years traveling around the world to meet with various Holocaust survivors for his book, Survivor: A Portrait of the Survivors of the Holocaust.
Borden recorded pictures of the survivors in their homes, and he used natural light to produce a sense of familiarity between the reader and his subjects.
Borden’s book presents portraits, written statements, and biographies from 200 Holocaust survivors. The book’s purpose is to remind people of their duty never to forget the horrible treatment of Jews during World War II at the hands of Nazi Germany.
He photographed the survivors in their own homes using natural light to create a sense of intimacy.
“I wanted to do something that would have a lasting impact,” Borden told ABC News Australia.
One survivor, Felix Fibich, described his attempt to create a multitude of feelings for his portrait.
“In my dancing I was trying to express a full range of human emotions from the joy of life to deep sorrow of pain and suffering of tragic life,” Fibich wrote.

Another survivor, Mary Elias, recounted her last encounter with her parents at Auschwitz.
“The last time I saw my parents was when we arrived at Auschwitz,” Elias wrote. “My father came back to get his prayer book. He kissed us and said, ‘We will never see each other again.'”
