Man dies after suicide attempt at Metro Center

The man who jumped in front of a Blue Line train at Metro Center on Wednesday afternoon has died of his injuries after being pulled from underneath the train.

The man was hit at 12:49 p.m. on the tracks by a train headed to Largo Town Center. Witnesses had told Metro that he intentionally jumped from the platform.

The 55-year-old Arlington man was alive when emergency crews rescued him from underneath the third car, but Metro spokeswoman Angela Gates said Thursday that he died later Wednesday. She declined to release his name.

News of his death came the same day a Metro station manager was credited with helping save a woman who planned to use the train system to kill herself last month.

Station Manager Timothy A. Lee was working at the Landover stop on the Orange Line when he saw a woman through the station video cameras walking close to the edge of the platform just before closing time on April 5.

He left the station kiosk and found her sitting on the platform edge, said Deputy General Manager Dave Kubicek. As Lee approached her, a train started to pull into the station. Lee shouted to the woman as he ran toward her. She stood up in a way that made him think she was going to jump in front of the train.

But he grabbed her before the train pulled up, Kubicek said. He escorted her to the kiosk, where he called police. The woman was taken to a local hospital to be evaluated, Kubicek said. — Kytja Weir
