Terry McAuliffe, the former governor of Virginia, stoked speculation that he might run for president with a meme he sent out depicting himself as a crab on top of a giant reptile who represents President Trump.

The meme appears to be a reference to comments he made Wednesday at the end of a speech he gave at a North America’s Building Trades Union conference. “If I can wrestle an alligator, I can sure as hell wrestle Donald Trump, boy, and that would be worth it. And you’d pay money to watch that debate,” McAuliffe said.
In 1980, McAuliffe wrestled an 8-foot, 260 pound gator in exchange for a $15,000 contribution for President Jimmy Carter’s re-election campaign.

McAuliffe said in his speech Wednesday that he would decide on his own presidential ambitions in the next couple of weeks.
If McAuliffe enters Democratic presidential primary field, he would become one of more than a dozen declared candidates in the race.
McAuliffe finished his term for governor in 2018, succeeded by Ralph Northam, who has become embroiled in a blackface scandal this year.
