Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., said Sunday that Congress has now become “complicit” in the various mass shootings that have taken place over the last several years, by failing to take steps to put in place tighter gun control laws.
“This phenomenon of near constant mass shootings happens only in America – nowhere else,” Murphy said. “Congress has become complicit in these murders by its total, unconscionable deafening silence.”
‘This doesn’t have to happen, but this epidemic will continue without end if Congress continues to sit on its hands and do nothing — again,” he said.
Murphy represents the state where the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting took place in late 2012, which claimed the lives of 20 schoolchildren and six adults. That event shook the nation and sharpened the discussion about whether new gun control laws are needed, but Congress was unable to act.
Murphy has since been one of the most vocal advocates of tighter laws, and said they are needed to prevent further tragedies.
“I’m aching for the victims, their loved ones, and the people of Orlando, and I pray that all those injured have a quick and full recovery,” he said. “I know the pain and sadness that has brought too many communities — Newtown, Oregon, Aurora, San Bernardino, and now Orlando — to their knees, and I can only hope that America’s leaders will do something to prevent another community from being added to the list.”
