IOC urges international sporting events to be pulled out of Russia and Belarus

The International Olympic Committee released a statement Friday recommending all sporting events currently slated to take place in Russia or Belarus be relocated or canceled.

“The IOC itself has no events planned in Russia or Belarus,” the statement read. “In addition, the IOC [Executive Board] urges that no Russian or Belarussian national flag be displayed and no Russian or Belarussian anthem be played in international sports events.”

Russia began its invasion of Ukraine Thursday. As a result of Russia breaking the Olympic Truce, the committee openly condemned the country, including Belarus because of “its support in this.” The Olympic Truce has been a United Nations resolution since 2021.

“The IOC EB expresses its deep concerns about the safety of the members of the Olympic Community in Ukraine and stands in full solidarity,” the statement reads. “It notes that the special IOC task force is in contact with the Olympic Community in the country to coordinate humanitarian assistance where possible.”

Events planned in Russia in 2022 include the FISU University World Cup Combat Sports, the World of Sport Hunting Fishing, FINA World Swimming Championships, International Federation of Sport Climbing World Cup, UEFA Champions League, Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup, Women’s Ski Jumping World Cup, and the World Touring Car Cup. Belarus similarly planned to host the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Cup, and the UEFA Nations League, among other events this year.

However, the IOC EB still signaled its support for the Beijing Paralympics this year. China has yet to condemn Russia’s violence in Ukraine.
