AMMAN, Jordan (AP) — A Jordanian security official says police have fired tear gas to disperse some 200 Libyans trying to break into their country’s embassy, angry at their government’s failure to pay the cost of medical treatment and other expenses in the kingdom.
Jordan health officials says the country’s hospitals have treated 45,000 Libyans for injuries sustained during last year’s eight-month-long civil war that overthrew long-time ruler Moammar Gadhafi. They say Tripoli pledged to pay the costs, but as of April some $225 million was outstanding.
The official reported no injuries during Sunday’s protest. He spoke anonymously because he is not allowed to make press statements.
An Associated Press reporter at the scene said five people suffered minor wounds and were taken to hospital.
The embassy could not immediately be reached for comment.
