Rep. Ilhan Omar called on Democrats to abolish the filibuster and replace the Senate parliamentarian after a plan to raise the federal minimum wage in the latest coronavirus relief package was blocked.
“Abolish the filibuster,” the Minnesota Democrat tweeted Thursday. “Replace the parliamentarian. What’s a Democratic majority if we can’t pass our priority bills? This is unacceptable.”

Omar’s tweet comes after Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough blocked Senate Democrats from attaching a $15 minimum wage mandate to their coronavirus spending package via the reconciliation process.
Omar joins several other prominent Democrats who have voiced frustration with Senate rules, including White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who said President Biden is “disappointed” by the news.

Some have suggested that Vice President Kamala Harris could potentially step in and override the parliamentarian, and several political activist groups sent a letter to Biden on Thursday asking him to do just that.
Earlier this year, the Congressional Budget Office released a report that showed raising the minimum wage to $15 would cause 1.4 million workers to lose their job by 2025.
