PHILADELPHIA – Actor and comedian Tom Green said Americans shouldn’t be afraid to come to his native Canada — socialist ideas and all — should Donald Trump become president.
“We might actually have to build a wall to prevent the hordes of fleeing Americans,” Green joked to the Washington Examiner.
Green said there is a lot that can be learned from Canada’s political system, adding that its strict gun control laws make it considerably safer than the United States.
“I think people that are fearful of a society that has gun control, universal healthcare and social services, and they think it is going to turn into some kind of a horrible liberal nightmare, I think they should come and visit a city like Toronto, Montreal or Vancouver,” he said. “It’s nice living in a society where you go outside and are walking around at night, you aren’t scared.”
Green said those who are fearful of socialist societies have never actually traveled to them, and those opposed to socialist ideas have given into the fear that anything different from what they have grown up with is harmful — a fear he said is rooted in a narrow and isolated view of the world.
As a United States resident for the better part of decade, Green attributes the rise of Trump to the nation’s affinity for the absurd and said he’s “flabbergasted” the media wasn’t critical enough of the “absurd” things Trump has said in its pursuit of higher ratings. The Internet and the myriad options media consumers now have is what he blames for a culture he believes rewards bad behavior.
Green was a contestant on Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2009, along with the late Joan Rivers and Dennis Rodman. His latest parody, “Do the Donald,” rips what he feels are the GOP presidential candidates more divisive statements.
“Using Donald Trump’s own words in the song reminds us of how he has fanned the flames of racism in order to divide America in the upcoming election. I believe that our leaders should focus on the positive aspects of a multicultural and inclusive society. These are the things that truly make America great,” Green said.
