President Trump said Sunday that there could be a “red wave” in the 2018 midterm elections, predicting that Democrats will be disappointed in their push to retake the House and Senate.
In a tweet, the president made his case boasting of strong approval numbers, but did not specify which polls he was referencing.
“Presidential Approval numbers are very good – strong economy, military and just about everything else. Better numbers than Obama at this point, by far,” Trump tweeted Sunday. “We are winning on just about every front and for that reason there will not be a Blue Wave, but there might be a Red Wave!”

Republicans hold 246 of the 433 House seats and in the Senate, the GOP has 51 seats — a razor thin majority that Democrats hope to dismantle.
According to Friday’s Rasmussen poll, which skews heavily in favor of Republicans, Trump got 48 percent approval, putting him 2 percentage points above former President Barack Obama at this point in his presidency. According to the RealClearPolitics average of polls, Trump had 43.1 percent approval on August 2, while Obama had 49.5 at the same time during his presidency.
Democrats struggled in the 2010 midterm elections, losing ground in the Senate and seeing control of the House handed over to the Republicans.
Another point Trump said could contribute to more Republicans winning in the midterm elections could be the low 3.9 percent unemployment rate — the lowest since 2000, according to Friday’s jobs report.
