U.S. Senate taking up Southwest Waterfront bill

A U.S. Senate committee is marking up a bill on Wednesday that would make it easier for a highly anticipated project to move forward. The bill would clarify the legal status of the property — good old D.C. and its quasi-city, quasi-federal status — for Hoffman-Madison to build on the Southwest Waterfront.

The bill was submitted by D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton and has already passed the House of Representatives by a voice vote. The bill now goes to the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs.

Norton’s Southwest Waterfront redevelopment bill (H.R. 2297) has been on a fast track since the House mark up on Nov. 3 and “is necessary for the District to move forward with a major redevelopment project that will bring 2.5 million square feet of hotels, office space, retail and residences, as well as increased maritime activity,” according to a release from Norton’s office.
