Police in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, are searching for a suspect they say violently attacked a 12-year-old boy who was dancing on a city street Friday night.
Just before midnight on July 3, police said an SUV drove through the intersection at Main Street near Independence Street, where the boy and several other people were participating in street performances.
Witnesses told police the attacker exited the vehicle and hit the boy, punching him in the back of the head and delivering a blow that sent him to the ground.
The boy, whom police did not identify, began bleeding from the head while the suspect ran back to the SUV and drove away.
The child was transported to a local hospital and is recovering, local television station WKRG reported. Police said the department has leads on possible suspects.
“This is a cowardly and disgusting act of inexcusable violence on one of our public streets, and the Cape Girardeau police would like to ensure that this suspect is safely apprehended,” Cape Girardeau Police Sgt. Joey Hann told the station.
