A clash between two NCAA football stalwarts was scrapped hours before kickoff on Saturday after the two teams’ medical staff failed to agree on the conditions that would allow the game to go forward.
Clemson University’s athletic director Dan Radakovich said the team was “disappointed” with the decision after doing everything possible to mitigate the fears of Florida State University’s staff following a positive COVID-19 test for a Clemson player who practiced with the team earlier in the week.
“Clemson has followed all of the ACC’s protocol in preparation for this game,” Radakovich tweeted. “We look ahead to returning to action next week against Pitt for Senior Day and Military Appreciation Day.”

In a statement released on Saturday, Florida State coach Mike Norvell said his priority is “the health of our student-athletes.”
“It’s unfortunate that we will not have the opportunity to compete today, but we hope to be able to play Clemson in December,” Norvell said. “I am thankful for the support and coordination between our administration, Clemson and the ACC office. Our team will now turn our focus to hosting Virginia next week.”
Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, who battled through a positive COVID-19 test to return this week, said he was “ready to play” after the announcement came through.
