A spokeswoman for George Allen says that Allen would have “reluctantly” voted to support the $38 billion budget cut compromise to avoid a government shutdown, after Allen had taken heat from fellow U.S. Senate candidates for not staking out an official position on the plan in the past few days.
The fact that military families would not have been paid played a large part in the decision, said Allen spokeswoman Katie Wright. He also would have preferred to see deeper cuts, she said.
“It’s amazing to him after six months of debating this, they couldn’t find more cuts,” Wright said.
As for the looming vote to raise the country’s debt ceiling, which appears to another big litmus test for conservatives, Wright said Allen could vote for it – with a caveat.
“The coming debt ceiling vote must be predicated on significant, ironclad spending cuts that would limit future spending,” she said.
