The Republican National Committee has taken in a record $135 million to use for the general election this fall, continuing its fundraising prowess despite the battle for the party’s nomination.
The RNC said in a Wednesday release that it has taken in $135.4 million through the end of March, which is a record for a party out of the White House. In March alone, the party raised $11.5 million and has a little more than $16 million on hand.
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus praised the efforts in a statement, touting many of the advances in the party since President Obama’s re-election, while also panning Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
“The record-breaking level of grassroots support we’ve gotten this cycle is powering our ability to build a robust field organization in every battleground state,” Priebus said in the statement. “Supporters from every part of the country know Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders would drive our country further into the ditch and that we need a Republican president in the White House to pull us out. Having outraised the DNC in 28 out of the last 38 months, we have built the best-resourced political party in history. Thanks to the generosity of our contributors, we will enter the general election fully prepared to turn over to our nominee a state of the art data, digital, and ground game infrastructure that will help propel them to victory in November.”
The news comes after weeks of front-runner Donald Trump attacking the party over a process he deems “rigged.” Trump also went after Priebus, saying in one interview that the RNC chairman should be “ashamed of himself” for the process.
The attacks came after Trump lost out to delegates in Colorado and Wyoming, However, Trump more than made up for the delegate losses with a big victory in New York on Tuesday night, which saw him take home at least 89 of the state’s 95 delegates.
