Pelosi knocks Trump again: He’s not ‘man enough’ to appear before Jan. 6 committee

In yet another blow at Donald Trump’s bravura, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said she doubts the former president has the guts to appear before the Jan. 6 committee to testify in response to a subpoena.

“I don’t think he’s man enough to show up,” Pelosi said in an interview with MSNBC that aired on Sunday. “I don’t think his lawyers will want him to show up because he has to testify under oath.”

TRUMP LAWYERS SHUNNING JAN. 6 COMMITTEE SUBPOENA: REPORT

The Jan. 6 committee voted unanimously to subpoena Trump for documents and testimony at the end of its last hearing earlier this month. The subpoena, which was then formally announced on Friday, demands evidence and documents be presented by Nov. 4 and that Trump sit for deposition in person or through a video link around Nov. 14.

In another interview that aired on Sunday, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) told Chuck Todd on NBC’s Meet the Press that if Trump appears before the committee, members will not allow it to become a “circus,” all but dismissing the notion of having a hearing live for TV. Trump has criticized the House select committee but has not stated publicly whether he intends to comply with the subpoena. Although the committee could seek legal recourse if Trump refuses, time appears to be running out, as Republicans could take control of the House in next month’s midterm elections and break apart the panel.

The public will have to make a judgment on Trump’s decision on whether to appear, as “no one is above the law,” Pelosi said, adding that whatever the committee decides to do in response sends a “message about his respect.”

“He isn’t honoring the oath we take to protect and defend the Constitution of the United States,” she said. “That’s a serious oath that we all take, and clearly, most of us have more respect for the office he held than he had.”

Pelosi is on a bit of a streak questioning Trump’s level of daring, telling MSNBC last week that the former president “wouldn’t have had the courage to come to the Hill” on Jan. 6. The speaker said this as she was asked to comment on newly revealed video footage saying on the day of the Capitol riot that she would have punched Trump if he showed up.
