OLCOTT, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities say a man has died after his sailboat overturned off the western New York shore of Lake Ontario.

The Niagara County Sheriff’s Office says it received multiple 911 calls around 4:10 p.m. Tuesday reporting an overturned vessel just west of the harbor in Olcott, 30 miles north of Buffalo.

Deputies say the Olcott Volunteer Fire Co.’s rescue boat found the sailboat and 49-year-old Christian Gothgen in the water about 100 yards offshore.

Gothgen, who lived in Snyder, was pronounced dead at Eastern Niagara Hospital in Newfane.

Officials say high winds and choppy conditions may have contributed to the accident, which is under investigation.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning.
