Major anti-abortion groups are pushing for an Obamacare overhaul bill that seeks to defund Planned Parenthood and stops tax credits from paying for abortions.
Family Research Council and Susan B. Anthony’s List both made a joint statement in support of the bill sponsored by four senators. The groups are pushing for Republicans later this month to take the last push on gutting Obamacare seriously.
“The pro-life majority controls both chambers of Congress and the White House. The GOP is without excuse,” the leaders of the two groups said in a statement. Failure to keep their promise to voters will bring into question whether this Congress can truly be called the ‘pro-life Congress.’ Rhetoric must be translated into verifiable action.”
The bill sponsored by four Republican senators would defund Planned Parenthood for one year. The women’s health and abortion provider gets roughly $500 million in federal funds a year but is banned from using any funds for abortion under federal law.
Sens. Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, and Dean Heller of Nevada are co-sponsoring the legislation. If approved, it would send Obamacare funding for the Medicaid expansion and tax credits to lower Obamacare plan costs to the states in the form of block grants.
The plan would not let any of the funding go towards a qualified health plan that includes abortion coverage.
