George Conway claimed that some members of President Trump’s administration are the “biggest fans” of his Twitter account.
Conway, 56, joined CNN’s impeachment panel to discuss the Senate trial on Wednesday. During the discussion, the panel addressed many Republicans’ loyalty to Trump since he took office.
Analyst Gloria Borger asked Conway if fellow Republicans had ostracized him because of his outspoken distaste for the president. He denied that he had been rejected and claimed that many people from Trump’s inner circle love his tweets bashing the president.
“I think deep down most of those people know that Trump is wrong, and they know what right is. They just don’t want to say it,” Conway said. “It’s just too painful.”
He continued: “In fact, at one point, I learned from someone who had worked in the White House counsel’s office that one of the biggest, some of the biggest fans of my Twitter feed in 2018, were in the White House counsel’s office because lawyers, it just violates, it just offends lawyers, the things that Trump does or thinks he can do.”
Conway claimed that Trump’s treatment of former Attorney General Jeff Sessions offended many Republican attorneys because they felt Sessions’s decisions within the Department of Justice were proper.
“It’s just not worth it to any one individual to speak up,” he said.
Conway has been a vocal critic of Trump, which has shocked many because his wife, Kellyanne Conway, is a senior counselor to the president and managed his 2016 election. Although the top Trump aide has opposed reporting on her marriage in the past, her husband has directly targeted her on Twitter while bashing the president.
In return, Trump has called George Conway a “whack job,” adding, “I think he’s doing a tremendous disservice to a wonderful wife. Kellyanne is a wonderful woman. I call him Mr. Kellyanne. The fact is, he’s doing a tremendous disservice to a wife and family.”
