ComEd, Openlands award grants for open spaces

CHICAGO (AP) — Commonwealth Edison and the land conservation group Openlands have paired up to award $155,000 in grants for projects that help preserve green space across northern Illinois.

The so-called Green Region grants were awarded to 22 park and forest preserve districts and municipalities that might otherwise not be able to afford environmental programs.

Openlands is administering the program.

Among the projects are restoration of a community garden in Chicago, prairie restoration in Rolling Meadows and a walking path in Willowbrook.

The grants were distributed this week, and grantees must spend the money within 18 months.

Recipients were chosen based on whether the projects provided a strong and immediate public benefit.
