Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will cross enemy lines — a.k.a. the Potomac River — next month to raise money for Virginia Democrats.
O’Malley will headline a fundraiser Aug. 2 in Alexandria, leaving his solidly blue state for one that has gone red in the years following President Obama’s historic election. Obama’s reelection fortunes would be considerably brighter if he again can win the Old Dominion as he did in 2008.
As the executive of a state that will have little impact on the Nov. 6 election, O’Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association, has frequently traveled the country to boost Democratic efforts in key swing states.
Real estate developer Ray Mahmood, who often holds high-dollar fundraisers with prominent Democrats, will host the event at his Mt. Vernon-area estate.
Attendees are encouraged to donate between $100 and $1,000 to the state party.
