House to consider putting statues in Capitol

The House of Representatives is set to vote on a bill Wednesday that would put statues representing the District and U.S. territories in the Capitol after Ward 2 D.C. Councilman Jack Evans sent letters to congressional leadership asking them to take action.

The District has long sought to have a statue of Frederick Douglas and another of Pierre L’Enfant sitting among others representing the 50 states in the Capitol. The bill the House will vote on will allow the District and the terriroties to each place one statue.

Several weeks ago, Evans drafted a letter to incoming House Speaker John Boehner, incoming House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer calling for immediate congressional action on the statue bill.

“I am pleased this matter will be brought to a vote before the upcoming congressional recess,” Evans said in a statement. “It is now in the hands of Congress to do the right thing.”

The bill is not expected to pass.
