Rep. Elise Stefanik took jabs at Democrats over their impeachment of President Trump during her remarks at the Republican National Convention Wednesday night.
“Since his first day in office, President Trump has fought tirelessly to deliver results for all Americans despite the Democrats’ baseless and illegal impeachment sham and the media’s endless obsession with it. I was proud to lead the effort standing up for the Constitution, President Trump, and most importantly, the American people,” Stefanik said. “This attack was not just on the president, it was an attack on you — your voice and your vote.”
Stefanik, like her fellow New York Republican Rep. Lee Zeldin who spoke Wednesday, came into the national spotlight during the House Democrats’ impeachment of the president.
She continued, “But the American people were not swayed by these partisan attacks. Our support for President Trump is stronger than ever before. We know what’s at stake in this historic election. Americans from all walks of life are unified in support of our president. It’s why more Republican women than ever are running for office this year. We understand that this election is a choice between the far-left democratic socialist agenda versus protecting and preserving the American dream.”
As the only Republican woman on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, which spearheaded the impeachment investigation, Stefanik often lobbed scrutinizing questions at witnesses critical of the Trump administration as well as publicly calling out Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, on several occasions.
The third-term Republican in New York’s 21st Congressional District is also a member of the Armed Services Committee and the Committee on Education and Labor. As the youngest Republican woman ever elected to Congress in U.S. history at age 30, Stefanik first came to Capitol Hill from her upstate New York district in 2014, succeeding Democrat incumbent Bill Owens, who retired.
Stefanik won her previous campaign in 2018 by 6 percentage points against Democrat Tedra Cobb, whom she faces again this election cycle.
The 21st District is also home to Lake Placid, where the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team defeated the Soviet Union in the Winter Olympics. Stefanik, in keeping with the “Land of the Heroes” theme for the evening, noted this as she said, “And today, it’s home to Fort Drum and the historic 10th Mountain Division, the most deployed unit in the U.S. Army since 9/11. Where I saw firsthand President Trump graciously thank and honor our men and women in uniform and sign the largest pay raise for our troops in a decade.”
