Gray moves to name park for Chuck Brown

D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray is making good on his pledge to name a city park after go-go music legend Chuck Brown.

Gray said Tuesday that he has sent legislation to the D.C. Council to name the western portion of Ward 5’s Langdon Park for Brown. The parcel of land, between 18th and 20th Streets, NE, would be “Chuck Brown Park.”

“I promised at his memorial service that we would name a park in his honor and that it would symbolize Chuck,” Gray said. “It’s appropriate that the Godfather of Go-Go should be honored by the city that embraced him and his music.”

Although Brown is poised to have a park named in his honor, whether the city will establish a Go-Go Hall of Fame – as now-disgraced Council Chairman Kwame Brown proposed – remains an open question.

Brown resigned his seat and will not be able to shepherd the proposal through the council, and Gray did not include the idea in his legislation.
