Woody Allen releases memoir under new publisher after being ditched by first firm

Woody Allen has released his new memoir with a new publisher after Hatchette Book Group ditched plans to print the book.

“The book is a candid and comprehensive personal account by Woody Allen of his life, ranging from his childhood in Brooklyn through his acclaimed career in film, theater, television, print and standup comedy, as well as exploring his relationships with family and friends,” a Monday press release from Arcade Publishing, Allen’s new publisher, said of the 400-page memoir titled, Apropos of Nothing.

The release follows Hatchette Book Group ditching Allen’s book earlier this month after a campaign spearheaded by his estranged children, Ronan Farrow and Dylan Farrow, to highlight past claims of sexual abuse against the Hollywood director.

Hatchette Book Group was the publisher of Ronan Farrow’s book, Catch and Kill, meaning he and his estranged father briefly shared the same publisher.

“I was disappointed to learn through press reports that Hachette, my publisher, acquired Woody Allen’s memoir,” Farrow said in a statement in early March, “after other major publishers refused to do so and concealed the decision from me and its own employees while we were working on Catch and Kill — a book about how powerful men, including Woody Allen, avoid accountability for sexual abuse.”

Hatchette Book Group, or HBG, said it was a “difficult” decision to cancel Allen’s book.

“At HBG we take our relationships with authors very seriously, and do not cancel books lightly,” a spokesman said in a statement. “We have published and will continue to publish many challenging books. As publishers, we make sure every day in our work that different voices and conflicting points of views can be heard.”

Allen has denied all allegations of sexual abuse.
