A Republican lawmaker is calling on Attorney General Loretta Lynch to step down following her decision to close the Hillary Clinton email investigation without filing criminal charges against anyone involved.
Rep. Dennis Ross, R-Fla., said his push for Lynch’s resignation was partly based on her “unresponsiveness” to questions asked of her during a hearing before the House Judiciary Committee Tuesday.
“Attorney General Lynch has broken the sacred trust of the American people,” Ross said in a statement. “Not only is she an attorney for the U.S. government, she is the highest-ranking legal official in the U.S., and, therefore, is held to the highest possible ethical standards we have in our country. Unfortunately, she has failed to practice by those standards.”
Republicans have been rankled by the Justice Department’s move to end the year-long investigation into Clinton’s handling of classified materials just weeks before the Democratic convention.
Lawmakers grew even angrier after Lynch refused to answer basic questions about the evidence behind her decision this week.
