A five-alarm fire could be seen from space Saturday night as firefighters battled the blaze that ripped through a San Jose Home Depot.
Residents were told to stay away from a significant portion of the city’s southern commercial area as the fire raged, authorities said.
“If you live/work in the area of this fire on [Blossom Hill] and smell smoke, we recommend that you shelter in place. Close all doors and windows to minimize smoke from getting inside,” the San Jose Fire Department tweeted.

Firefighters arrived on the scene within minutes of receiving a call around 5:00 p.m.
At least 100 firefighters and 30 units responded, with the primary goal of getting everyone out of the Home Depot.
A local pet hospital was evacuated, and a designated area has been marked where residents can pick up their pets, the report noted.
The fire generated so much heat that satellites were able to pick up the blaze, according to the National Weather Service.
