White House press secretary Sean Spicer offered a what appeared to be a lukewarm endorsement of FBI Director James Comey on Monday, hours after the top intelligence official confirmed that his agency is investigating possible connections between President Trump and the Russian government.
Asked if Trump maintains “complete confidence” in Comey as head of the FBI, Spicer said, “there is no reason to believe that he doesn’t at this time.”
Comey delivered a much-anticipated testimony before the House Intelligence Committee on Monday during which he told lawmakers that FBI investigators have yet to unearth any evidence that would support Trump’s claim that his predecessor ordered surveillance on his campaign headquarters during the election.
“The department has no information that supports those tweets,” Comey said. “We have no information that supports them.”
Comey’s testimony echoed comments made by the chairmen of the House and Senate Intelligence Committees, both of whom have said they have no evidence to support the president’s allegations.
