Trump: Chinese President Xi Jinping showing ‘enlightenment’ on US trade demands

President Trump on Tuesday applauded Chinese President Xi Jinping for signaling a willingness to lower China’s auto tariffs and respecting U.S. intellectual property rights, after recent weeks of threats from each country that they are about to impose formidable trade barriers on each other.

“Very thankful for President Xi of China’s kind words on tarrifs and automobile barriers…also, his enlightenment on intellectual property and technology transfers. We will make great progress together!” Trump tweeted Tuesday afternoon.

Xi told Chinese business leaders on Tuesday that he plans to lower auto tariffs later this year.

Trump vowed on March 7 to help the federal government and law enforcement officers in their fight against steep barriers to U.S. auto exports and a booming counterfeit and pirated goods market. Trump threatened to impose tariffs on up to $150 billion worth of Chinese goods to make up for the losses.
