Rep. Elijah Cummings was signing subpoenas just hours before he died on Thursday, according to a Democratic lawmaker.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley said Thursday that members of his staff told her he was still signing subpoenas to pursue “justice for immigrants in my district & across the country” in his final hours.
“A man of his word every moment of his life,” she added.

Cummings died due to health complications early Thursday morning at the age of 68. As the chair of the House Oversight Committee, the Maryland Democrat was a key figure in the ongoing impeachment inquiry into President Trump.
At a recent hearing on border conditions, Cummings went ballistic on acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan telling him he should be doing better.
“I get tired of folks saying, ‘Oh, oh, they just beating up on the Border Patrol. Oh, they just beating up on Homeland Security.’ What I am saying, is I want to concentrate on these children. And I want to make sure that they are OK,” Cummings said. “We are the greatest country in the world. We are the ones that can go anywhere in the world and save people.”
