Hillary Clinton compares Trump to Nixon in commencement speech

Hillary Clinton drew not-so-subtle comparisons between former President Richard Nixon and President Trump during her commencement address at Wellesley College on Friday morning.

“We were furious about the past presidential election, of a man whose presidency would eventually end in disgrace with his impeachment for obstruction of justice, after firing the person running the investigation into him at the Department of Justice,” Clinton said, reflecting on her own time at Wellesley.

Clinton graduated in 1969, the same year Nixon assumed the presidency.

The former Democratic presidential nominee drew parallels between the time when she graduated from college and today, as graduates are watching developments involving a federal investigation into Trump unfold.

The FBI and several congressional committees are investigating potential ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia, as well as Russia’s meddling in the 2016 election.

Trump fired former FBI Director James Comey earlier this month, and the Justice Department appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller to serve as a special counsel to the investigation.

Congressional Democrats have already accused Trump of obstruction of justice after it was revealed Trump asked Comey to end the bureau’s investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn.

Democrats ramped up their accusations after it was revealed that Trump told Russia officials in the Oval Office that his firing of Comey eased “great pressure” he faced on Russia and called the former FBI director a “nut job.”

Others have discussed filing articles of impeachment against Trump. Nixon resigned from office under pressure in 1974 after the Watergate scandal led to calls for impeachment.
